It's ok to hold on to something for balance. If you're not worried about toppling over you can focus more on the movement and potentially lift heavier weights, which will likely build more muscle.
If you don't hold on to something, that's also ok. You will challenge your balance and all the little muscles that help to keep you stable will be called into action.
