Training lifting things safely is one of the most important exercises you can do. The key is to brace your core, and the core includes your lats and pelvic floor. Lift light loads and try to program yourself to instinctively switch on your core. It's not good bracing your core for a heavy deadlift only to injure your back lifting a bag of groceries. The amount of bracing can be modulated (lots for heavy weights and less for light weights) but if you're lifting anything off the ground think about creating a protective 'pressure chamber' around your spine.
