If you have the arms separate you can keep them parallel which is great for keeping the straps away from your arms and giving you more space. It is the best way to do exercises like presses.
If you join to a single anchor point you can spin around (parallel straps will get twisted) so it's great for exercises where you twist or it makes it easier to put your feet in the slings because you can start facing the straps and then turn around after putting your feet in.
The extension straps can also give you extra length if needed.
